The relationship between species diversity of algal communities and the watershed area in rivers in the south of the Far East of Russia has been studied. It has been found that in the upper reaches an increase of the watershed area up to 80–100 km2 leads to a notable increase in the number of species, varieties and forms of algae. Then the rates of an increase of taxonomical richness of algocenoses sharply decrease. In general, the relationship between the number of algal taxa (D) and the watershed area of the river basin (S, km2) is described by the power functions: D = 91.6S0.194, R2 = 0.97.
