During a study on algal diversity in volcanic soils around Mutnovsky volcano (Kamchatka Peninsula), a clonal culture of a Chlorococcum-like green algae was established. The strain was characterized by a coccoid thallus organization and a parietal chloroplast with a pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction takes place through spherical aplanospores and naked zoospores, which differentiates the new strain from members of the genus Chlorococcum. SSU rDNA and ITS rDNA sequence comparisons revealed affinity of our isolate to Chlorolilaea pamvotia. However, genetic distances and presence of CBC/hCBC in the conserved regions of ITS2 rDNA secondary structure made it possible to describe it as a new species, Chlorolilaea mutnoviae sp. nov. A detailed examination of life cycle of our new species led to an emendation of the genus Chlorolilaea.
