Life cycle, cytology, morphology, and molecular genetics were examined in monoclonal cultures of diatom species Luticola ectorii, L. permuticoides, and L. sparsipunctata, isolated from architectural structures in the city of Vladivostok and from the aerophytic habitat of Primorsky Krai (Russia). The species were recorded in Russia for the first time. A detailed morphological description of the valves was provided, and the structure of the theca and teratological forms were described for the first time. A preliminary classification of theca type’s characteristic of Luticola members was developed based on the analysis of our own data and existing literature. The chloroplast rbcL gene sequences were obtained for the first time for L. ectorii and L. permuticoides. Cis-anisogamy (IA2a according to Geitler) was observed in L. ectorii and L. sparsipunctata, while isogamy (IB2b according to Geitler) was revealed in L. permuticoides. The auxospores of L. ectorii expanded parallel to the apical axis of the gametangia, whereas those of L. sparsipunctata expanded perpendicularly. The direction of auxospore growth was not dependent on the position of the gametangia in L. permuticoides. The initial cells differed from the vegetative cells in the shape and number of striae and areolae bordering the central area. This is the first description of the structure of the perizonium and incunabula scales for L. ectorii.
