The area of summergreen temperate forests lies in the eastern part of temperate zone, with-in cold and cool subzones of East Asia. The main vegetation type is mixed forests co-domi-nated by Pinus koraiensisand various broad-leaved tree species: Tilia amurensis, T. mand-shurica, Fraxinus mandshurica, Quercus mongolica, Betula costata, Kalopanax septemlobus,Phellodendron amurenseand Ulmus japonica. Old-growth forests in the area were drastical-ly reduced in the 20th century as a result of forest exploitation and fires. However, they arestill among the best preserved nemoral forest ecosystems in the world. This paper describesthis vegetation in its basic types, with a focus on phytogeography, ecosystem structure anddynamics and developmental trends.
