The Islands of Peter the Great Bay have continental origin. Time of their branch is dated 10-11 thousand years ago. Formation of fauna of these islands occurred during the late Holocene period. Due to full isolation of islands from continent and from each other separate island’s populations evolved independently and apparently by present time are unique in many peculiarities. The morphological research of field mouse Apodemus (Apodemus) agrarius (Pallas, 1771) from one island of Peter the Great Bay, the Big Pelis Island have detected mice with unusual morphotype of the second top molar (М2) (Kostenko et al, 2000). It is known, that absence an additional t3 cone in this tooth is a diagnostic trait for A. agrarius. Therefore, the occurrence of t3 in individuals in the Big Pelis Island has rise a question of specific accessory for mice of the given island population. The research of chromosomal sets from 8 individuals of the field mouse from population of the Big Pelis Island and their comparison with continental populations was the purpose of the present work. Chromosomal characteristics of eight individuals of field mice A. agrarius from the Big Pelis Island in Peter the Great Bay do not differ from those in continental populations (2n=48; NF=56-54). In the investigation the variability of the number of the chromosome arms was obtained that combined with the variability of the number of small metacentrics, varying from 6 to 8. The C- and NOR- staining of chromosomes corresponded to that in continental populations. The study was supported financially by the Far East Branch Russian Project no. 09-II-CO-06-007 and 09-III-А-06-168.
