The history of the classification of the Valsaceae is reviewed, and the importance of various characters in the delimitation of genera is discussed, using a system of weighting of characters. The question of undiscovered genera with various combinations of characters is aired, and in particular characters such as the ascospore type, the position of ostioles, the presence of various anamorph types, and of zone lines delimiting the stroma are discussed.
