We examine the main patterns of vegetation distribution on the largest island in the northern part of the Kurile archipelago. For the results of investigations made in two volcanic areas of the island (the Ebeko and Chikurachki volcanoes) we report the data on vegetation diversity, and on the influence of volcanism on vegetation cover. The soils of the island are characterized for the first time.
