Somatic chromosomes in two species of Aster sensu lato, A. ageratoides var. ageratoides and A. incisus were investigated by the conventional aceto-orcein staining squash method and the fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) method using 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) probes. They commonly showed the chromosome number of 2n=18. The chromosome complement of two sat-m,14 m and two sm chromosomes was found in A. ageratoides var. ageratoides; and that of two sat-sm, 14 m and two sm chromosomes was found in A. incisus. In FISH, the rDNA site was commonly detected on the terminal region of the short arm of the two sat-chromosomes in the plant of A. ageratoides var. ageratoides and A. incisus.
