THE FIRST DETECTION OF BEET YELLOWS VIRUS (CLOSTEROVIRUS FLAVIBETAE) IN THE RUSSIAN FAR EAST

In the process of ecological and virological monitoring of agrophytocenoses in the Primorsky Krai regularly carried out by the Laboratory of Virology of the Federal Scientific Center for the East Asia Terrestrial Biodiversity of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FSCEAB) in beetroot plantings (Beta vulgarisssp. vulgaris var. conditiva) several plants with severe deformation and yellowing of the leaves were identified. A viral isolate Beet/Novitskoe/2018 was obtained from diseased plants, which was deposited as an unclassified strain in the Russian Collection of East Asian Viruses, which operates on the basis of FSCEAB. This paper presents the results of experiments on infection of test plants from the Aizoaceae, Amaranthaceae and Solanaceae families by mechanical rubbing with carborundum, to study the possibility of vector transmission of green peach aphids (Myzus persicae) (the most universal carrier of plant viruses in the Far East), as well as the morphology of virions detected by electron microscopy. Based on the complex of data obtained - the development of a productive viral infection in inoculated test plants, the symptoms manifested in the case of the infection, the level of effectiveness of mechanical and vector transmission, the characteristic size and shape of virions - it was found that Beet/Novitskoe/2018 is a strain of Beet yellow virus (BYV), or Closterovirus flavibetae (Martellivirales: Closteroviridae). This virus is widespread all over the world including the European part of Russia, Central Asia and China, but data on its circulation in the Russian Far East have not yet been available. The discovery of C. flavibetae here requires clarification of the regional phytosanitary control program for vegetable crops.
