According to the results of a study in watercourses of the western and eastern coasts of Kunashir Island (Kuril Islands), a taxonomic list of invertebrates from the benthos and syrton is given. The highest similarity was obtained for the caddisflies’ local faunas. The leading factors in the development of the taxonomic richness of aquatic communities are recognized as the thermal regime of watercourses and the diversity of biotopes present in them, which satisfy the ecological needs of various hydrobionts. The use of the term “lower identifiable taxon” in the hydrobiological literature is discussed.
