The paper presents the results of diagnostics and determination of the classification position of soils, which are located in the central part of Urup Island using the profile-genetic approach. The studied soils were formed on the coastal and slope areas of the island. The morphological, physical, and physicochemical characteristics of the studied soil profiles are provided as well. It was revealed that soils on a steep slope are polygenetic formations, but do not belong to layered soil types. The soils are light in terms of particle size distribution. A decrease was found in the content in depth along the profile of silicon oxide with a simultaneous increase of 1.5-2 times the number of one and a half oxides. The soils developed on the stretch of the sea terrace are layered. It was suggested that the physicochemical properties are influenced not only by plant associations, a low amount of organic carbon, but also largely by proximity to the slightly alkaline waters of the Sea of Okhotsk.
