The island populations of the reed vole showed twice as much phenotypic variable than the mainland ones. During the isolation age, a number of island populations of the reed vole gained irreversible morphological and genetic changes. The variability value was compared to the values of the island area, interspecific competition rate, and environmental anthropogenic impact rate. We found that the phenotypic variability is not correlated with the island area and competition rate (number of other rodent species), but a probable cause of destabilizing selection in the island populations is the anthropogenic impact.
