The pollen morphology of 24 species of Quercus L. from 3 subgenera has been studied. The material for our study were pollen samples of living East Asian Quercus species taken from the collections of the Komarov Botanical Institute (LE), Moscow State University (MW), Nanjing Forestry University (NF), Nanjing Botanical Garden, Nanjing Technological College of Forest, Xingjiang Institute of Agriculture, and University of Tokyo (TI). The detailed analysis of the characters carried out by morphological and statistical methods (discriminant and cluster analysis) allowed to subdivide the studied species into three groups by their pollen size, and into two groups by their apertures. Three main types and ten subtypes of the exine sculpture have been established by SEM. On the base of these three morphological types, the pollen of the genus Quercus was divided into 3 groups: Quercus (Lepidobalanus)-type, Heterobalanus-type, Cyclobalanoides-type. The morphological types correspond to the subgenera of Quercus L. (Menitsky, 1984): Quercus (deciduous oaks), Heterobalanus Oerst. (evergreen sclerophyllous oaks), Cyclobalanoides (Oerst.) Menitsk. (evergreen oaks).
