The origin and establishment of the genetic (geographically genetic) approach in forest typology followintt B.A. Ivashkevich and B.P. Kolesnikov studies is outlined. Basic classification taxons are designated. The research methodology is overviewed through the case studies on forest classification in Russian Far-East, Urals and other regions.
