A comparative analysis of the data on viruses presented in the last reports of the International Committee of Taxonomy of Viruses is presented. A scientifi cally substantiated system in taxonomy of viruses was elaborated for the fi rst time in the classic style for biological objects, including the following hierarchical levels: order, family, subfamily, genus, and species. Group, being earlier the main taxonomic structure, was abolished. New data on virus genome along with standard tests permitted to identify viruses more exactly. New genera were discovered, and new families were formed. Problems related to the taxonomy and nomenclature of plant viruses are considered. A brief characterization of their families, genera, and some type species of genera is given. Nowadays, many viruses have not identifi ed due to the absence of necessary information of their properties. With appearance of new data, the taxonomy and nomenclature of viruses will be improved. In 2011, the ninth report - the main document on taxonomy of viruses, which is published every 3-5 years, will appear in journal Archives of Virology.
