The period of work of the outstanding scientist V. L. Komarov, associated with research in the Lake Khanka basin, is discussed in this article. The results of the “Khankaiskaya expedition” of 1913 are described in more detail. Special attention is paid to V. L. Komarov’s arguments regarding the presence and origin of steppe communities in the Lake Khanka and Razdolnaya River basin, and in general in the Amur River territory.
