Efficiency of live feed use in rearing juvenile angelfish Pterryptophyllum scalare (Schultze, 1823) (Perciformes: Cichlidae), Pinoy Paraiba variety

The juveniles of the freshwater angelfish Pterophyllum scalare (Schultze, 1823), Pinoy Paraiba variety, were selected for the experiment aimed at evaluating feed efficiency. The fry selected (age 25 days; mean fork length 1.85–1.87 cm; mean body weight 0.3–0.39 g) were assigned to a control group and an experimental group (n = 94 per group) using the analogue method. The experiment lasted for 6.5 months. The mean length of juveniles in the control group, which received pelleted food, grew from 1.85 ± 0.02 cm to 4.27 ± 0.01 cm, whereas that of the experimental group, which received live feed, increased from 1.87 ± 0.01 cm to 4.14 ± 0.02 cm. Mean body weight rose from 0.33 ± 0.008 g to 1.56 ± 0.033 g in the control group and from 0.39 ± 0.01 g to 1.45 ± 0.01 g in the experimental group. The highest growth rates were observed for juveniles aged 3–3.5 and 5 months. These results can be used in formulating a balanced diet for juvenile angelfish reared in captivity.
