The history of more than a half-century discussion about the origin of oak forest is considered. The author characterizes main concepts, analyses arguments supporting different concepts; describes refugia of nemoral flora in the north of oak range: communities dominated by Mongolian oak. The existence of specific phytocenotically active core of the oak flora which would prove broader (than modern) distribution of original oak forest in REE is discussed.
