Genetic variability of wintering Black vultures based on analysis of died birds during winter 2000-2001 in Primorsky territory O.V. Dolgova, M.V. Pavlenko, S.G. Surmach Laboratory of The Evolutionary Zoology and Genetics & Laboratory of Ornitology of The Institute of Biology and Soil Sciences, Far East Branch RAS, Vladivostok, Russia The genetic (allozyme) variation in wintering population of Black Vulture Aegypius monachus from the South Ussuriland (Russian Far East) was investigated based on starch gel-electrophoresis of proteins. Samples (frozen blood, liver and pectoral muscle) were collected in nature from 25 perished birds. 16 proteins loci have been analyzed: LDH-1, LDH-2, MDH-1, MDH-2, 6-GPG, GOT-1, GOT-2, ?-GPD, ALB, Hb, EST-1, EST-3, EP, GP-1, GP-2, GP-3. Only two loci were polymorphic (EP and MDH-2). Preliminary data allow us to suppose low level of genetic variation in A. monachus: 12.5% and 6.3% of loci were polymorphic (P95) for samplings of 2001 and 2002, respectively. The mean heterozygosity for two samplings is also lower (0.042, 0.031) than average of birds. Mean values of polymorphism and heterozygosity are 0.094 and 0.037, respectively. They are as low as the same in Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres), which is rare and endangered too.
