New parameters are presented for comparing the drift of benthic invertebrates with the density of organisms on the bottom and the magnitude of the daily production of their population: The minimum drift distance and its intensity. The minimum drift distance is negatively correlated with the biomass of benthic animals and positively correlated with drift intensity. The drift of hydrobionts greatly exeeds their production. It is postulated that the benthic community of a stream can attain a more stable state as a result of drift.
