The very strong eruption of Peak Sarychev volcano (Matua Isl., central Kuriles) in June 2009 is examined. According to analysis of remote sensing data (photos from space) and ground observations, carried out in summer 2009; it is described the nature of eruption and catastrophic impact on ecosystems of the island.
